The Pixel Ape News Project seeks to create original musical works that feature excerpts from the obscure, cross-dimensional video game news outlet Pixel Ape News, as their sole vocal element. The compositions, as well as the album’s interludes, feature snippets from news bulletins, weather segments, interviews and even advertisements that aired on Pixel Ape News over the course of multiple decades. In a few cases, excerpts from interviews that directly reference Pixel Ape News, or its reporters, aired by unaffiliated media outlets have been sampled as well. After combing through various broadcast recordings from the P.A.N. archives, G. B. Loon selected some stand-out stories to use as inspiration for the accompaniment. In keeping with the video games that inspired the broadcasts, Loon wrote and recorded various extended electronic pieces, composed of various layered and intertwined synth parts, to be manipulated and dissected by producer and collaborator Daniel Besuijen. Loon also recorded and shared several additional synthesizer parts and variations on the forms to be used at Besuijen’s discretion as well. Besuijen took all the synth recordings, and the sampled P.A.N. audio and arranged the pieces into more dynamic musical expressions. The songs as they appear on The Pixel Ape News Project: Volume 1 (Nintendo) are the final products of this collaborative project.
